Ways to Locate My Phone Online

There are several ways you can locate your phone if you lost it, whether it’s been misplaced or stolen. As a precautionary measure, you should always take preemptive steps to ensure that you’ll be able to locate your device easily if it’s ever out of sight. Some steps include setting up the ‘Find My Device’ feature, which is available on all smartphones, and using tracking services and apps.

If you’ve lost your phone and you didn’t take any of the precautionary measures, there’s still hope. The following ways may help in locating your device.

Using an Antivirus App Account to Locate My Phone

Smartphone antivirus apps offer more than what is required. Top notch antivirus apps have the privacy, security, or anti-theft feature included. This feature is helpful when locating a device. It uses the GPS to track the exact location or the last location of the device if it has been turned off.

An antivirus app such as Bitdefender for Android offers the following services:

  • Theft Protection allows you to locate, lock, and wipe your phone; it also features an alarm.
  • After installation, you could perform these operations from the Bitdefender Central website or via SMS.
  • If the thief changes the SIM card, the app notifies you by sending an SMS to a ‘Trusted Number’ you previously input during the setup process— such as your friend’s phone number.
  • It also automatically snaps a picture of anyone who tampers with the phone.  Certain triggers, such as failing to unlock by inputting the wrong password, will cause an automatic snap and send the image to Bitdefender Central. All you have to do is log into your account and access such details online. You can then report the person to the authorities.

Also, many antivirus apps can be integrated with your wearable Android smartwatch. Your smartwatch can be configured to automatically alert you if connectivity is lost due to leaving your phone behind. You can then order your smartwatch to start ringing your phone.

Using an IP address to Locate My Phone

The Internet Protocol address, better known as IP address, is a string of numbers that devices use to access the internet. Many apps in our phones use a particular address to communicate across the web. This is a long shot and isn’t effective given that it only provides up to city-level details. However, you can then contact the police to take further action.

Apps such as Gmail, Evernote, and Dropbox use IP addresses. If you have installed any of these apps, you can easily track your misplaced device. Log into your account via a website using a computer.

For Gmail

  1. Log into your account via the website
  2. Scroll to the bottom right and click on Details.
  3. You will then have access to your IP address.

For Dropbox

  1. Go to Setting, click on the Security tab, and then on Devices.
  2. Hover over the Information icon to reveal the IP address of the device.

For Evernote

  1. Log into your account via the website
  2. Go to Settings and then access history.
  3. You can then locate the device via the IP address.
